Many universities and colleges use essays and essay questions to gain further knowledge pertaining to their applicants. In many cases they are equally if not more important than test scores, GPA's and extra curricular activities. An application essay offers great insight into the personality of the applicant, along with a better understanding of what type of person s/he truly is.
Regardless of what your topic or question is, there are a few basic rules every college applicant must follow when writing their application essay.
First, and often forgotten, is proofread your paper! In fact, get others to read it too, and don't forget to spell-check. This tool is there for you to use, though it isn't perfect so make sure you review each paragraph carefully.
Second, do not waste the time of the person or people reading your essay. They aren't asking for a summary of your application or for a novel about your life. By keeping it short, sweet, and to the point, you are sure to grab their attention.
Third, if you are asked to pick your own topic make sure to be original. Pick something that you are capable of writing a well thought out paper on, and if possible, something you are passionate about. Admissions officers will be able to feel your excitement if you relay it in your writing.
Finally, though a good college application essay is important, don't let yourself overly stress about it. Applying for a college is an exciting time in your life, don't get lost in the paperwork shuffle. Just remember to proof, keep it short and sweet, choose wisely, go with what you are passionate about, and enjoy it. You have one shot to wow the admissions officer, so make sure that one shot counts.
